Accommodation in the Faroe Islands

Finding the right accommodation in the Faroe Islands plays an important role in how a journey unfolds. While the islands are compact, daily sequencing make location choices relevant to the overall structure of a trip.

Most hotels and larger accommodation options are located in and around Tórshavn, the capital. From there, travellers can reach most regions within a manageable driving time, while also benefiting from the widest selection of restaurants, cafés, and shops.

At the same time, alternative stays in smaller villages or on outer islands can create a very different and often more local experience.

Staying in Tórshavn – comfort and central access

Tórshavn is home to the highest concentration of hotels in the Faroe Islands, including several four-star properties of consistently high standard.

The four-star hotels are:

  • Hotel Føroyar
  • Hilton Garden Inn Faroe Islands
  • Hotel Hafnia
  • Hotel Brandan

Hotel Føroyar is located on a hillside above the town and is known for its panoramic views across Tórshavn and the surrounding fjords. The property also features a high-quality spa area and is often chosen by travellers seeking a quieter setting with elevated views.

Hilton Garden Inn and Hotel Brandan are both modern properties located closer to the town centre. They offer contemporary comfort and easier access to the city center.

Hotel Hafnia, situated directly in the centre of Tórshavn, is slightly older in character but remains a well-maintained and reliable choice. Its central location makes it particularly convenient for guests who prefer to stay within walking distance of the city’s main streets.

In addition to these four-star properties, several three-star hotels provide more budget-conscious alternatives without compromising basic comfort:

  • 62N Hotel
  • Hotel Djurhuus
  • Hotel Tórshavn

These hotels are generally simple but functional and well located.

There are also smaller and more exclusive options in Tórshavn, including:

  • Nólsoyarstova Boutique Apartments
  • Havgrím Seaside Hotel 1948

These properties offer a more intimate and design-focused atmosphere and are often appreciated for their character and location.

Why Tórshavn often makes logistical sense

Because the Faroe Islands are relatively compact, it is possible to reach most major regions from Tórshavn within one hour.

Staying in Tórshavn provides:

  • Central positioning within the road network
  • Access to the largest restaurant selection
  • Evening flexibility without long drives
  • Easier coordination of daily excursions

For shorter stays of four to six days, basing the entire trip in Tórshavn is often practical and efficient.

For longer stays, dividing accommodation between regions can reduce driving time and provide a different perspective on the islands.

While Tórshavn offers the broadest range of hotels, several properties in other regions provide worthwhile alternatives.

Hotel Vágar is located close to Vágar Airport and can be convenient at the beginning or end of a journey. The hotel is of good quality, but relatively small, so advance booking is advisable, particularly in summer.

Other regional hotels include:

  • Gjáargarður
  • Hotel Tvøroyri
  • Hotel Klaksvík
  • Hotel Runavík

Gjáargarður, located in the village of Gjógv, is particularly popular due to its dramatic setting. Staying there offers direct access to one of the most scenic northern landscapes.

Looking ahead, a new four-star property, Hotel KG, is expected to open in Klaksvík in 2026. This development will significantly strengthen accommodation options in the northern part of the islands.

For travellers seeking a more local atmosphere, smaller guesthouses and B&Bs in villages can offer a distinct experience.

Staying on smaller islands or in rural settlements allows closer interaction with:

  • Everyday village life
  • Agricultural surroundings
  • Coastal and mountain landscapes

These properties are often family-run and vary in style and comfort level. They may not offer the facilities of larger hotels, but they provide proximity to local rhythm and community, and it’s truly a special experience.

In many cases, accommodation on smaller islands can create a particularly memorable experience due to the scale and setting.

Cottages and independent stays

The Faroe Islands also offer a wide range of well-designed cottages and holiday houses located in smaller villages across the country.

These stays often provide:

  • Privacy
  • Scenic surroundings
  • Kitchen facilities
  • Flexibility for longer stays

For families or small groups, cottages can be a practical solution. They also allow guests to stay in locations where hotel options are limited.

Seasonal availability and booking considerations

Accommodation availability varies significantly throughout the year.

Summer is the busiest period, and popular hotels may reach full occupancy well in advance. Early booking is recommended for travel between June and August.

Outside the summer season, availability is generally more flexible, though certain properties may operate with reduced capacity during winter.

While availability can occasionally become limited, solutions are usually possible with sufficient planning.

Structuring accommodation within an itinerary

The choice between staying in one location or dividing accommodation across regions depends on:

  • Length of stay
  • Planned activities
  • Seasonal conditions
  • Type of preferred accommodation

For shorter trips, a central base in Tórshavn often provides the most efficient structure.

For longer stays, combining nights in Tórshavn with one or two nights in other regions can reduce daily driving and deepen the experience of specific areas.

Accommodation should ideally support the overall flow of the journey rather than dictate it.
